Romance is....

People who speak to me know that I do keep coming back to this topic pretty often cause it is very close to my heart! Romance always is!

Currently, romance is such an abused term. With movies classifying shoddy sex as romance, songs with derogatory lyrics being romantic chartbusters, the good old romance is really forgotten. Most people have started to believe that romance is unrealistic and being romantic is like 'a requirement'  to be together! It is so not true. There is no need for a kiss on the lips or peck on the cheek either! If there is romance is in the heart, it will display itself in one way or the other!

Romance is....
  • A simple 'good morning' from your love that gives a headstart to your day.
  • Listening to the same song 500 miles away and enjoying the same few lines!
  • The same spark in your eyes when you see your love of 40-odd years
  • Laughing till it hurts over something silly and non-understandable to anybody outside!
  • A hug that is your biggest mood uplifter ever!
  • Long coffee chats forgetting where you started!
  • Sinking back into music that reminds you of moments shared together!
  • Sharing the same simplest things of your day, today and everyday!
  • Experimenting something new, failing and not being judged!
  • Understanding the other's mind without elaborate explanations!
  • Shared Randomness, wandering thoughts and aimless drives!
  • Deep Conversations about the future ending in a tub full of ice-cream!
Love is expansive so is romance! Figure it out. Experience to know it!

Cheers!

Let go what was....

How many of us really try to break the pattern or routine?

I wouldn’t call myself a great risk taker, though it’s possible that I might do a few things that seem really random to the world.

A few months ago, a huge impending restlessness resurfaced in me.
Respecting restlessness will risk you breaking the routine is something all of us believe. While I spent months in denial, visions of the inconsistency between ‘what was’ and ‘what it is supposed to be’ caused a constant itch to follow my intuition. Eventually, the decision happened.

When we conclude on something we are either taking a call on our own or there are some external forces that contribute in pushing us conclude. Everything happens for a reason. Good or bad, be thankful to that force.

In between all the stares, questions, my lack of answers, frustration for choosing flight, lack of ability to fight was this beautiful halo! Happiness! I did realise that my mind was trying to support me through every decision I made.Blame your head or the supreme power, I started appreciating my courage and strength to stand up for myself. Giving myself the time and space to soak in this whole new decision of quitting corporate was something I had never done before. There will always be firsts!

The Brief Break was here. Be it the uptight me loosening up, or a scheduled calendar throwing away her watch I thoroughly started enjoying the mindspace I had. There are always these visions in your mind that you choose to ignore when you are on a rota, trust me, those are the visions that are meant to make you happy. Never ignore them. I pursued those visions religiously and I was surprised to find that opportunities are always available for each one to draw their path.

We all get caught in the maze of comparing our past at this point in time.
Would it be financially viable? Would it be practical? What if I fail? and lot such questions cloud us from moving ahead.  The thought clarity and Happiness found in this process will help us navigate through all this fog.

Philosophy ends, so does my post. Is it a happy ending or a sad ending depends on what you are gonna do with your life! Let go what was... Grab what is supposed to be!

A Simple rebound can be your biggest Idea

Do you know that many times in life, when our decisions seem really irrational and we feel quite low, there is a possibility that we are jumping into the next big idea of our life.

If you have read this and gone ‘meh’, yes it is ok. It is as vague as it sounds.

As per the economics books, any journey has its own peaks and troughs. This is purely subjective. It is financial for a few, mental for a few more, relationship for many more and so on. At the peak, we will feel like ‘happy birds’ launching ourselves to the sky and beyond. On the contrary, a trough can lead you to so much cynicism in life shunning your ability to see the positives.

When there is a low, the mind starts working like a ‘devil let loose’. A situation I have faced with my head and just reflecting on how am turning it around for me! There is a lot of misery, disappointment, anxiety, fear of future and in few cases even mental depression. It is very sad to see that people need to go through this. They in fact stop taking any risks.

Penning Down a few thoughts based on my experiences on what can we best do...

It is important for us to think that when there is a dip, anything after that can only be better than that! ‘It is anyway up-hill. So go right into it without fearing the failure. The simple question we can ask our self is ‘What can be worse than the present?’

So once you have made up your mind that anyway it will be better to stop wondering ‘how much better’! This is the exact time of life we need to use the mantra ‘just go with it’. You never know, you might just laugh at your this phase of life in future!

Build on the positivism people around can give you. All you need is a message that states ‘Hope you are feeling better today?’ Being around people who will just listen and not give advice unless asked really helps. You have way too much on your plate to deal with, leave alone those ‘advice toppings’ coming your way.

A low is the best ever opportunity to focus on self and do any necessary course corrections. Be it physical fitness, mental strength, skill development. There is no better time than this to focus on that. The motivation levels are terrific, believe me!

It is possible that a trough can leave you torn where you cease trusting yourself and others. Rather, start doing just the opposite. Trust yourself and others. If somebody is offering you help genuinely, trust their instinct and trust your capability. You will never ever go wrong there.

Certain times, there are people who just ‘like to watch the world burn’! You know who I am talking about. Keep away from the curious cats who are waiting to know what went wrong with your life! Smile and Laugh so hard that your positivity just shoos them away!

I am sure, each one in these stumpy situations will have an idea, that will be an inner passion waiting to be kindled. We most often do not action it due to ‘self-doubt’. I suggest ‘go for it’. So what, if it is a rebound. In most cases, a rebound does turn into one of the best decisions of your life! Remember - You have to do this for you. This is for you. Live for yourself!

That’s enough gyan for the day! This post is not an essay of self-pity. It is a pure capture of experiences and more! Please do not text me asking if everything is ok with me.

Cheers

Are you that ‘feminist’ type?

I get asked this question every time I open my mouth to say everybody is equal!

All I know for sure is that people who ask me this question have no idea what that word means! Infact even most of the self confessed feminists do not know what it means. ‘Feminism. Let’s use the word La La La’! But really, what’s the meaning?

Is feminism smoking, drinking, wearing skimpy attire and walking on the road, saying things like ‘let the man bear the baby’. Noooo! You guys have got it all wrong. Unfortunately Feminism is the most over-used, over-hyped and a wrongly understood word.

To answer the above question. No, I ain’t a feminist, I am a ‘Gender Equalist’, the someone who truly believes that men require the same amount of rights and flexibility the women get! I do get the point that our society is backed by a huge baggage of patriarchy but do you realize that it is also the  women who have played equal parts in leading our society to such imbalance? Earlier, feminism focused on equal rights for women, equal wages, right to education, right to choosing who you marry and a lot more constructive things. Actually you should read the post ‘The Super Grandmom’ on my blog to know about this iron woman who handled every bit of ten household single handedly at peace. She is the true gender equalist!

Sometimes I keep wondering in corporate environments, when women actually want to play the gender card to their advantage, they do either of this - cry and emotionally create self pity or protest and create unrest. This is the pure reason why they feel weak in the larger scheme of things.

Many a times I keep thinking, why can’t we just be equal? Why can’t we just do what we want and move on with it? The moment we think ‘Why can’t we do what he does?’ We have just bench marked ourself with the opposite gender when our physical, genetic and mental schema is so different and landed up in a path which is neither here or there!

On a parting note my friend - Remember -

If you are women who speaks the language of feminism but wants to be treated like a queen, doors opened for you and expects the man to pull his wallet out. Sorry my friend. You are nothing more than a confused adult who needs help!

Think about and read too Guys let’s have an equal environment

Do you have a crush?

Hola,

PS: Please avoid reading this if you feel like a ‘Sanskari Bahu’, a ‘20th Century Patriarch’ or if you are my family member!

Crush as defined by google is a brief infatuation on somebody (usually not attainable). Is it ok to have a crush outside your existing relationship?

The search for this question revealed some very surprising yet shocking results. I threw this question open to a varied demographic audience (all my friends of course)  and got some shocking responses. While most of the GenY thought that it was perfectly fine, I had that ‘are you crazy’ kind of reaction from a few Millenials! Friends staying inside the country were a lot more open to the idea of such harmless crushes in life than outside India. But why? It was time for research.

Generally, the motive of somebody having a crush is tainted upon the fact that they are trying to fill something lacking in their existing relationship. This is necessarily not the case. It’s a simple work of the heart, some oxytocin and visual signal to the brains. A normal human emotion has been made into a guilt trip by our social norms. We have been taught to share certain things only in matrimony or with members of the same gender. If not, it becomes a blunder.

Do you know that research states that 70-80% of people in successful relationships have such harmless crushes and quite a few of them share it with their partners too! If something is shareable all the more harmless it gets. But, if you have something to hide, sorry - can’t help you there!

I just hope I don get calls from my friends for getting these thoughts on to their partners heads. As for me, if you have read all this long and you really want to know if I am crushing on somebody - my blog’s name and headline will help you figure it out!

Use your heart and crush away you guys!! Guilt free & Happy!

Mixed Bag of 2017

Melange of experiences, emotions and expressions. That was 2017 for me in short! This year has taught me a lot which the past 30 years haven't. Sometimes things just fall on your lap, while sometimes I did learn it the hard way too!

This post is gonna be about my learning based on observations and experiences. I promise it wont be a rant and it is not exclusive either! In fact, a few of these pointers are going to make you go - 'Ah! I have been there too!'
  • Value Today & Everyday - This year started with my mom bouncing back in style out of a major illness. The whole traumatic episode that lasted 6-8 months taught me (in fact my mom did) to believe that every day was valuable. What if there is no tomorrow? You never know! So enjoy every day and never procrastinate anything!
  • Judge & be Judged - My previous post here will talk in detail about this. Cut the 'voices in your head' about every person you see. Fear less being the victim of the ‘voice in their head’. All that matters is 'YOU'
  • Fight or Flight - When there is a problem everyone reacts in one of these 2 ways. There is no middle path mind you! You either stand there and fight or you just run from that place 'as fast as you can'. You will have 'voices in others head' calling you a coward if you choose 'flight', but believe me those same voices will call you an 'arrogant b****' when you choose 'fight'. Just do what is good for you! There is no right or wrong here.
  • Politics & You - You can keep saying that you work in a corporate to 'learn, grow and change the world' but there is one thing you can never evade from, Politics. You are either the 'Super-power', the 'Politician', the 'by-stander' or the 'victim'. Choose where you be. (PS: I can hear you all say 'Oh Yeah!' through my phone)
  • Eat Clean! Get Fit! - From being an explorer of all the diets and weight loss methods in the world, I have finally found my right path. A fitness method I love, trainers who get the best out of me, and the concept of 'Clean Eating' without guilt. Just hope this continues in 2018.
  • Collaborative Parenting - There are many theories around this. 'Don't let the child choose, what do they know and a lot more'. But I have broken it, at least in my home. Giving the child the right to decide what she wants to do, where she wants to be, has helped me so much. Empowering her has empowered me as a parent. Rather than being directional, we talk and decide what we want to do together. She exactly knows what she wants. She is just 'Three' years old!
  • Age is no bar - I have come into terms of this fact that age is no bar. I hang out so much with my SiL who is much younger and one of my best friends who is much older! I am completely at peace with both of them equally! I have had few of my most happiest moments and shared few of my darkest secrets with them.
  • Click here to read - Re-Igniting Romance - A blog post written by me 4 years ago on how couples need to work on their partnership post kids. I can truly say, I followed this and a lot more for the last 3 years, making me 'I practise what I preach' kinda person. (I am just hoping my partner doesn't read this!Lol!)
Gyan time over! You may now get back to partying hard and welcoming 2018 in style! Let's all look forward to what's in store.

As for me, I am getting back to my Family party infused with some yummy South Indian food, Karaoke night, Bhajans, and hopefully a drive if none of us feel sleepy!

Cheers

Judge and Be Judged!

It is sometimes very funny to see how I try and get back to writing posts and then lose it again. But I did discover one clear pattern. I write in phases of life where there is extreme happiness or something lacking. (Now am not gonna say what phase my life is in, it is for you to ‘JUDGE’)

You might wonder - why capitals on that word alone. Well yeah! That’s what this post is about. So, as per ‘F.R.I.E.N.D.S, Turning 30 should give me some enlightenment right? sharing one such enlightenment here.

As someone who facilitates and is pretty active in the Inclusion initiatives at work and outside, I do get the privilege to actually preach what I don’t practice. It is not that I have anything against practising it, but it just doesn’t come naturally. That’s who we are and how we are grown.  In a society where being judgemental and biased(most of the time unconsciously)  is ‘the thing’.

Someone with an expensive watch, car or anything - the mind will immediately say- who knows what he/she did to get there? Look at a fit sexy looking middle aged woman - ‘she spends all the time on herself and not with children’. These are ‘voices in the head’ that have been ingrained in us forever. But why? I keep wondering.

If this mind voice is not enough, let’s take it to the next level. Assumptions and expectations - ‘I received no text may be that person doesn care.’ ‘I wanna meet that person but what if he/she gets a wrong signal?’

STOP THIS - screams the heart. Why can’t it be lot less complicated. Why can’t we just be honest with each other? Why? Cause we all have the fear of being judged! We fear being the victim of the  ‘voice in their head’

But ya! I try a lot to break this pattern and slowly get a step closer to being open, non judgemental and inclusive. You should try it too. Shut the voice in your head and if possible others too.

Now - Please turn off the ‘voice in your head’ that says ‘What’s with aishu? Something has happened to her! You will never know, my friend.

Cheers

Wearing you is the best thing that happened to me!

So thanks to my friend who picked up a non-ergo carrier for me(obviously he din know). Neither did I know and I used it twice. The discomfort made me think if it was right.
That time of life - I would exploration phase where Facebook seemed useful and necessary!
It was so hard to choose where to begin but now it's too hard the stop! Starting off with a ringsling to use for a family wedding I have now landed up with Buckled carriers and exploring wraps has become the way of life. I look forward to meeting moms with similar thoughts every month and look forward to teaching people the little wearing that I know.I have become this one excited mom who is too excited to wear the baby and go out!

Madras Nalla Madras!!

At that time when I really decided to keep away from writing on filter kapi and Hindu Crossword which every other person is writing on, it was hard for someone for me to really keep shut!
Hence, I went on this search for a word that describes what Madras does to me. Got it! Feelings(Vasool raja style). I still don seem to be calling it Chennai, may be that's the amount of feelings i have towards the city that shared my life!
I have not been to my fair share of cities to say mine is the best. It is also fair for my  friends in other cities to call their city the greatest, but machan mine is 'Madras' it is an adjective of its own.
While all of them complain that Madras is conservative so slow in adapting to other cultures, tell me one thing which is not in Madras from the below!
Temples to theatre!
Culture to Club!
Dance to Disco!
Pongal to Pub!
Sarees to Shorts!
Sambar to Shots!
Madras has it all! To the right level and mix!
As I was driving this morning on the most crowded Mount Road and when I hear Ilayaraja's and Rahman's best running on the radio, that's what is Madras. Contrasts! Starting from Mylapore Mornings to Napier nights the city offers its beautiful best everytime you go around exploring her.
The moment I just drive into the city from a vacation from may be some cold place and land up at Saravana Bhavan I realize I don need a menu card! Its all about sambar! Winding up there, I get at the car at home thinking, how i missed sweating and the heat. Life is faster when its Hot!!
The time when you are suddenly up on a Tuesday night cracking through the Satyam Cinemas website to make it to the first weekend for a movie.. My husband always says this is a perception problem that i don even consider other theatres.  But Madras is Satyam Cinemas and Butter Popcorn!
While my endless rants of Madras might jus go on and on! I would just like to retire to bed, closing my eyes to the best of Ilayaraja reminiscing about my city of dreams!
Cheers!

Do you hear it too??

Nowadays, I seem to spend a lot more time on the road, than earlier, thanks to the distance between home and work! Making this entire drive interesting is our FM radio stations of Chennai.
They subject you to all the international chartbusters with award winning lyrics. An example would be 'Mascara pottu mayakiriye, mastana pesi kalakuriye'. Wow.. And when u try changing channels which are of course in plenty, you hear things like 'Oru Karapanboochi Polae Enna Kavuthupotale'.
At this juncture, my music control buttons on the steering wheel are in utter pain due to my frustration.
Where I finally land on one of my favorite channels where the RJ is pretty decent, and then he opens his mouth to talk about some vague topic like, 'uh don Mind.. Its that vague' and just goes on about it.. Here you know, to become an RJ, all you need is these things..
  • Quite a horrible voice and some weird accent
  • Un-understandable Tamil and English
  • Talent to repeat the same thing 20 times back to back by changing words like is, was, and, it etc
  • Real bad sense of humour
  • And ofcourse, a bad line up,of songs.,
All these planned set of attempts to kill your morning are interspersed with unbelievable set of advertisements.
Thus, the morning drive comes to an end, when u almost reach work, there is this one nice song somewhere in some channel, but you need ta park and leave!!
While i do have the choice to still switch to some music on my phone, there is this compulsive behavior, to still browse these 10 channels in the desire of finding that one good song which you might feel like hearing. Am sure all of you experience this too.
Am not blaming every person here, there are good RJs who do a great job, few nice shows in the night who play nice songs and all. Still, there remains this obnoxiously bad package of shows making us feel that this medium of communication is crap! While it is really something which reaches so many people.. The entire traffic on the road am sure are browsing through the same way as I am.
Looking for that one good song, one good piece of news, or that one good talk by an RJ.. They are still looking...

Few hours, a plenty memories!

'Rail Snehidam' I've always heard my aunt use this word when I was a kid referring to any passing quick ending relationships. Also, we ve seen our cinema industry constantly focussing on train relationships, I ve always wondered, how could a few hours with a stranger make any difference.
Today, most probably my last alone train journey for a lot more months, I reflect on these 10 months of my weekly bangalore train travel.
These people who I've met, might not be in touch but will always stay in the mind. These train journeys made me rekindle my writing spirit. These people have featured in my blog as experiences, memories or characters who inspired me. Be it the loving old couple who blessed me a great life, a chic aunty who discussed feminism with me, the busy businessman who I shared a movie on the laptop with, the young chap resembling my brother saying 'bye akka', the 'Thatha who spoke the best English I ve heard in days, and ya, the TTRs who gave me a recognizing smile! All these people have made my, if not strenuous travel, really pleasant!
These journeys have taught me so much patience, adjustment, silence, and the thing that 'I can stay without my cellphone signal and WhatsApp for a few hours, my head won't break'!!
Not to forget the best, booking shortcuts for railway tickets online.. 'Talk to the Expert'

Love... Ageless..

I ve always wanted to write about it. Adult Love. Now, am not calling most of us in our 20s and 30s adults here. We are still in PDA(Public Display of Affection) mode in our life!

Observing behavior has now become my favorite hobby. I meet couples in train who are too old to lift their own bags! But he always protect his wife from carrying those bags, so sweetly saying its ok to her while she just goes behind him trying to atleast have her hand on one handle of the bag and feels that she has accomplished in helping her man.

My husband always talks about his 'Guru' who during their pilgrimage trips used to trek Sabarimala slowly with his wife and they used to hold each other all the way atop the hill at the age of 80! That's what we call Love. Love that has seen everything living in a joint family, in laws issues, financial crisis, child and difficulties and still has made the most of their happiness!. Making fun, laughing at weaknesses, and the romance is so subtle but you feel love and positivity in the air! Makes us wonder how ageless love can be!

While I was thinking about all these things, I came across this movie - Pannayarum Padminiyum. A totally under hyped movie that really should be a flag bearer in Tamil Cinema. A movie that broke all boundaries of the regular formula followed. A man who tried to impress his wife by trying to learn driving and the woman who wanted to experience going with her husband in the car with pride. The bond showed in the movie got tears in many eyes, including mine in the cinema hall making us wish to have such a love story to say!

The basis of this I always feel is going  through all the peaks and troughs together in life with a positive attitude. In short, fighting and freaking together!

Will I ever get to being there. Only time will say!!

Cheers

Hampi - Overrated or Underknowledged!

My February this year started with a trip Hampi, a historic place in northern Karnataka, earlier the Vijayanagara kingdom. As every traveller would do, I read a few reviews, asked around people and browsed through photographs a week before my husband and I were to land up in “The Abode”(as described by websites. If you wonder that the previous line sounds sarcastic – Yes, it is!
Hampi to my eye was nothing more than overrated historic ruins that have been made outrageously famous because the research was conducted by non-Indians. This line might provoke a ‘What? – Aishwarya is so tasteless’ feeling, but trust me, until you reach that place, you would never realize that it is nothing close to what has been described or photographed.
So, the culprit was me who pushed my husband to plan the trip. Whilst I enjoyed the trip, my stay and all that, I still wonder, what did I come back with? We initially saw a photo library full of the most beautiful pictures with awesome lighting and angles. Kudos to the photographer! We went and found that, the spot looked nowhere close to what we saw. Yes, photographs deceive.
Monuments open only form 9am – 5pm, when its sunny in an area full of rocks and sand, all you feel while travelling are heat waves on you. After walking and scaling the stairs and rocks of those completely unmaintained monuments you walk out to find a small shop in the corner selling water for Rs.50. (You have no choice). And place after place which includes things like Queens Bath, Market and all that looks the same – deserted and ruined.
It wouldn look good if I don credit a few places that had excellent art work like a stepped tank, some chariot and a Rama temple, but it still remains unbelievable to me as to how this place has gained great popularity. Being a Madrasi, I would say going to Mahabalipuram is a much beautiful experience where enough refreshments, shelters and shades make your visit comfortable.
I wouldn discount the entire experience as my taste lies more towards beaches and islands and maybe it is my under knowledge that makes me write this. But that doesn’t take away the fact that Hampi is a completely overrated spot. My suggestion – do not stay for more than a day and a half. Rather spend your time in Bangalore - Shopping!!

Success is a 'relative term'

Success is always a relative term” said the old and wise or may be that is what I have been told to believe. But never have I seen it in practice.
Like how in the movie 3 Idiots – when a baby is born people stare inside the cradle saying “he will make a successful Chartered Accountant like his father and take over the family business”. By the way, does the baby have any idea of what you are saying? He/she is forced to grow listening to sermons of different definitions of what success really means, by the time he realizes, he/she is so confused.
That’s when he/she wonders – “What is successful”? Is being a DJ at a 5 star hotel not successful? Is being a copyrighter at an ad company dumb? This phenomenon is purely because of those pages of definitions.
Success in the family is defines as any of these or being ‘like’ any of these –
·         Being a doctor at Apollo Hospital
·         BE to ‘Some Big Named’ University followed by MS in the US
·         Settling in the US in Intel or IBM(which 100000 other people are too!!)
·         Being in Timbuktu as some programmer (Timbuktu is outside India! Come on!)
·         Phd from IIT(that could be in some subject you might have no idea what it is)
·         HR in one company(They have no idea of reality)
·         Business – Preferable Legacy
·         Married to someone of any of the above categories(Girls – it is so easy to be successful)
·         And this list just goes on!!
oh! I forgot, successful people own apartments!
This is the typical Indian mentality, where if you don’t fall under these categories, either you are told - you are unsuccessful or you need to work on falling into these categories. I am no exception to having heard these sermons, though I am a firm believer of my first statement. Pressures become so high when there is a choiceless situation too!
While I ve always thought everyone who is happy with their life, happy with where they are today and who love what they are doing are successful. They have it all right – work, money, family, contentment! But most of them that way are shunned for being non-ambitious, in-turn unsuccessful and non-respectable in the society. The society – no one knows is just a group of over-bearing, exaggerating, set of people who are saying just the right things in their lives (That is what we do too!).
For those who love what you do – continue doing it. You will always remain the most successful and happy! In mind, heart and soul! Success is always a relative term!!

Feeling - A Woman!!

Disclaimer: Cause I have written this post does not necessarily mean it is my story. It is like yet another Mani Ratnam, Gautam Vasudev Menon or Selva Raghavan movie, where parts of this blog post might be inspirations from my life. This post might also be a huge baggage of my habit of watching too many English Romantic Comedies!
When does a woman become a woman! I ve always wondered this. Pardon my upbringing in a not very traditional woman way. I have always had the freedom to choose what I would be. Unlike a lot of other girl-friends of mine, I have never been asked to bow in front of a man or even control my loud voice! I was what I was. So, it would be quite weird when I heard words like ‘Behave like a woman’ after more than 2 decades of my particular behaviour pattern.
Moving on to think when a woman truly feels a woman. Is it when she is married off, being forced to feel shy and bend your head (which might possibly be the last time your head was held high)? or when she gives birth to her child? Or when she is seen wrongly by men in public? Or when she has the advantage of taking a Ladies queue in most places (because it is obviously shorter)?
Your woman might be too bold, too strong or even may be a feminist but that doesn stop her from being this Girl craving for attention.
·         She feels a woman – when her man tells her “You look beautiful today!” or “This color suits you”.
·         Being Sensitive, you capture her heart. One word to offer your help and she feels like she owes the world to you.
·         When she is respected, walking with you hand in hand makes her feel like your companion. Trust me, she will do everything possible to learn cricket, management or politics just to discuss it with you.
·         Being smiled at, from a distance when you find her – she loves it. Even an unfamiliar environment becomes normal and happy for her.
·         When she is complemented, while she cooks or chooses things for love. This encouragement will make her strive to achieve the taste of your liking.
Small things make a huge difference, opening her car door, seating her at the restaurant, holding her hand while crossing the road, calling her to say you miss her or even give her a single rose! All these invoke in her the pleasant her. She might have issues, problems or cribs but never will it fail to strike the chord when these simple yet small things happen to her. She feels a Woman!!! Ready to conquer the heights !

WhatsApp & Groups

We all know that Social Networking in recent years has become 'the' thing. Even this blog link, I will first post it on FB and WhatsApp. So, even I am a victim anyway, just that at times I wish, lord! Can I have a little peace without that notification on my mobile beeping! You might say switch the ringer off, but the increase in curiosity and anxiety these things have got me into doesn let me do that!
Most recently, something that I have noticed becoming a rage is WhatsApp groups.. Trust me! More than the value they add to your life, they are the biggest pain in the ***.
What started as an easy way of carrying info and catching up has now become the biggest monster of constant texting. And ya constant reading of like some 72 texts that flidded ur inbox during your restroom gap! As my brother always says, "the 'typing..' that appears on top of the WhatsApp window during a chat is sure to get you into anxiety disorders"
I wonder, people who always talk about lack of work life balance and the need of always being connected to work are the most active in office WhatsApp groups..
Office WhatsApp groups are a group of 20 people of the team together talking on the group. Any info, discussion, decision point floated in that group will never have a logical end not will have a conclusion ever at all. Cause each one types whatever the want. The disasvantages of such groups include being subject to people talking about unfinished work, loose comments on others jobs and worst of all, long forward messages that never end. Even one to one conversations happen in the group at a lot of instances.
In process of talking so much on WhatsApp to the same colleagues who we see at work 10 hours a day, we lose out on seeing our family faces, hear them out or even have dinner time conversations with them. When right from morning traffic to the night time serial being discussed virtually, are we ceasing to live for the moment. ?? Hell yes! Answers my Mind.
As much as I spoke about misuse, certain things, that make me feel good about WhatsApp groups is the connect it provides. Being part of groups of people in different time zones, cousins in different parts of the world, groups of people who studies, worked together wanting to catch up makes it one of the best means of catch up ever. The time when we used to have international phone numbers and say 'iyayo ISD' WhatsApp has broken those barriers completely. While I see my Now Tech Savvy mom, moderating a group with all her cousins and neices, I feel happy seeing WhatsApp being put to proper use.
While wondering what next will make our lives 'unnecesarily busy', it's time for me to get whacked from all people in the WhatsApp groups I belong to! Minimum 100 slaps I expect!
PS: In the time span of 30 minutes  writing this post I went back into the WhatsApp window atleast like 25 times(excluding personal messages)

Cheers

Re-igniting Romance(post kids)

Though I am yet to experience whatever I am writing here. I would like to surely try what i write and not make it yet another article.
While catching up with a set of close friends(read:now parents of my little darling friends), my friend jokingly commented to his wife "I know we have a baby, but you know what people do if they don get food at home, they go to the hotel" Knowing my friend for years, i completely knew he was joking. But that triggered my thoughts on re-kindling romance post kids. Especially if you have a partner you know long enough to miss each others company. It makes it all the more mandatory to re-kindle the relationship, is it not?
A famous stand up comedian says "a woman's brain is like an interconnected electronic circuit. It jus goes zzzzzzz"
We are the 'XY' chromosomes who keep juggling with things of  mind. Like for example..
"What do i cook?
What i do for the baby?
Need to complete this at work..
Mom said something, right i need to do that..
I need to call for grocery
Oh! I need to clean that draw"

Between all this, we forget one thing major! Their Man.
That's the point. While all the focus goes on the new arrival in the family, family starts to fall apart. While women get so worked up on this, men start working harder just to make up with their boredom.
As a truly loving couple, all they face is growing distance and a dire need to come back. They might even express it to each other, but one needs to really take the effort to get back together!
May be a few small things from picking my little brain i thought could be..
Ordering dinner - Setting up the table at home, candle lit and have a dinner catching up on things
Watching Movie - watching some old time favorite, holding each others hands
Coffee - Sip morning coffee together in the portico/balcony and talk about the day
Dessert - A cake or milkshake together at night after putting the baby to sleep
Walk the Talk - a long walk with the stroller where the kid might also nap in the stroller while you guys get to catch up and talk
At times, I even feel they should leave kids with grandparents and go shopping or so together. A good break helps. A lot lesser frustration and a lot more romance.
Also, research states that for couples who do not get back in 4-6 months post kid, their relationships, their romances suffer.   As we all know, romance might lead to eventually a lot other things that you might have enjoyed doing together in the past too! Giving a u perfect opportunity to be friends again and and great parents.
So! Let love be in the air...

Mini Communities in Multicultural Environment

Disclaimer: This post is strictly not against the Tam Brahm cultures or ways – Just that I picked this up as an example being a Tam Brahm myself and knowing the culture at the back of my head. This is applicable to every other community in the country.
Please note that this post might also have quite a bit of Tamil(Brahmin style) – Translations given

NamakaramVaango,  Enna panrel.. Inniku aathula enna samayal?
(Translate: Greetings, please come, what’s up, whats cooking at home today)

These are the words one normally hears in a typical Tam Brahm household. To be even more precise a household who are still living in reminisces of the 60’s. Those who think “God is God, rituals are bigger than god, and customs & culture– meant to be followed, the way it is convenient to them, yet claiming it to be the right way” (Ithu thaan vazhakkam). But looks like these days, business meetings and corporate environment hear such words too
Now here, we pause to talk about the kind of people who behave a certain way – just to ‘show off’ their community.

One fine morning at work, when I was engrossed on a presentation, I heard conversations that I would normally expect to hear at home or may be a wedding or even a temple. Looking up to see that, they were colleagues of mine, belonging to the same community.

In the past, I had always wondered, why do they punish me at school when I use vernacular languages, why was I pushed to talk only English all the time at college. Though I was convinced to do it to adapt to an international working environment, it came as a surprise to me when I heard such lingo. But then, where was international here? If I could talk the way I could talk to my athai and paati (aunt and grandmom) at home, why did I struggle to read and write Shakespeare?

As these thoughts ran through my mind I just realized – People did it for sheer ‘show-off’. Were these people true to the values of the community? Do they follow every ritual? Definitely NO, though they might claim to do. People who din talk the same way were shunned, made fun off or even singledout. For example, in Chennai,if someone spoke in Hindi – immediately they get snapped saying ‘Switch of that Zee Tv’! Am sure, same is the case in rest of India too. The evolution of these 'Mini communities in a multi cultural' environment are a huge bane to workspace. In many cases, where conversations are non-understandable, people are judged by language, huge mockery during meetings and moreover ganging up against other communities are a few of the visible disadvantages.

Greeting people like they were your Uncle/Aunt, using peculiar accent to talk at work environment, I feel is a major disgrace to the community. While usage of this language is completely permitted in a closed circuit, it is inappropriate to be using such lingo in a business meeting with vaango/pongo (tambrahm lingo).

Doing a deep dive of why they use it, obviously when they know English – Looks like bonding, mingling or at times even icing. Talking a particular way makes people judgemental towards you – positive and negative. Though mostly it is manipulated by the person to bring in a positive outcome(you know what I mean). Certain people use it as advantage to get where they want too.
These behaviours in fact brand people too ! These Marwaris are like that, these Bengalis like this, this Brahmins like this (no offence meant).

While most of other countries, international environments, never encounter these issues, mentions my friend from Australia. In fact, there are not permitted to ask you for your gender, community or even religious preferences. Leaves me with the question, “Then Why Us?"
Clueless, answerless and branded as ‘Talking Nonsense’(“Unnaku paithyam pudichurthu di) by my mom – I still continue to question and will continue to question too!!

The Super 'Grandmom'

The times when being with family was the way of life and "Grandmom" was 'the life' at home are the times my dad was born. Family here means a lot more with 20 people under one roof!

A lot of our dinner-table and tea-time conversations revolve around his Grandmom who my dad can't stop talking about. This article is an excerpt of those conversations and his ramblings about this woman who an epitome of 'self-made' 'self taught' and of course Love !!

While these days most of us talk a lot about Woman Empowerment, Feminism even when there are opportunities and avenues, she, my dad describes was beyond sheer empowerment in times when women were meant for the kitchen.

Hailing from this well respected Brahmin Clan living in an ancestral palatial home in the temple town of Kumbakonam, all the family went through was bad career decisions by the men, fear of sustanence and a lot more downfalls. The time when 'Kunjani Paati' the nine-yard clad, olden day women rose up to the occassion and turned the life heaven for everyone around her, including his mother and his sister whose marriage lives had turned into unfortunate experiences. Giving her five daughters and granddaughters the best weddings, the grandsons education and of course excellent food for this family of 20 and guests unlimited! My dad still tells me in wonder
"Is it even possible for a woman to be so selfless, unflappable and shoulder such responsibilities with such limited resources?"

Today when my mom makes mor kali, a south indian delicacy one can see my dad indulge and immediately and describe his Grandmom.
Even at those times of manual grinders this strong woman used to make batter for dosas all by herself to feed a huge hungry family. When the kids including my dad passed the kitchen, she used to call out to them and proclaim "neengelaam 20 suthu suthina, aaluku 2 dosa!" Meaning - "Grind for 2 mins to earn your 2 extra dosas" and all of them used to religiously help her for it, laughs my dad!

Once, my dad recalls, she developed an ailment, and the strong woman she was, came all alone to Madras for treatment. She called her grandsons to come too, not to help, but for sight seeing! When we cringe to read the papers today, she never left a moment empty and was up to date in news, be it politics or current affairs - a mini 'infopedia'.

While I have never lived with her or even seen her, my dad describes her so vividly that i feel like she lives along !! He reflects on her thoughts of discipline, empowerment and importance of education, while she saw him proudly graduate. Attributing his career to her push, he says with pride that his 10th grade educated grandmom did everything she could to get him to study to make him in his career.

Now, as times change, morales and disciplines change and when women are almost treated equally with men,  this one woman is already a benchmark 50 years ago.

Strong yet Selfless!Brave & Bold!Responsible yet Resilient!Commanding yet Compassionate!Humble yet Proud!

As I reflect on these nostalgic reminisces of my dad, I recognise where he got his respectful attitude to a woman from.  May be that is the quality what my dad looks up to in my mom ! Maybe that's what my dad aspires me to be! An embodiment of love, affection, social consciousness, fortitude, frugality, liberty and a lot more!

Now.. Today.. Each one of them in her family feel proud to say that they belong to the legacy created by That Woman!! The Mother of all Grandmoms!!

Cheers

Marketers say "You Need It"

In one of these random weekday evenings, where I had a chance (read:no choice but) to sit and watch NDTV Profit. Ya! My dad likes such channels. Most of the dads do..
Being my usual self, it all started with commenting on anchors clothes and accent and all that - blame it on my limited knowledge on profits !!
It was a real estate show where they displayed all posh buildings, facilities with their prices and all that in all these newly developed cities like gurgaon, mohali etc. Further focusing on the show and the content, I found them talking about margins and profits, while I noted that my dad was watching it closely too. While I reached for the remote to change, he said "wait am watching".. I jus looked at him and said "Gurgaon?? How these people are Creating a Need na appa" He turned saw me and turned back..
May be he thought - This girl is brainless.. But on the contrary ! May be I was right !! He had no comments.. Turning pages in Masslows Heirarchy of Needs ! Or even primary basic needs.. Was n house just a basic need(safety to be precise).. Having house in Luxury is perfectly acceptable too ! Cause u can afford it and what else do u earn for ? But 2 to 3 houses, jus to buy, sell and buy again !! Where things started way back in trading, lending interest, has now come to a level of playing with real estate for just money. A lot of these luxury flats in multi storey apartments, remain locked. Cause owners(investors is the word for it) are waiting for the right time to sell.
And there the money goes, to builders who just build for the sake of it, those cracked out people who advertise it, those actors who endorse it and of course to NDTV Profit too.. Even made me think ! Why would someone sell houses on Profit? His selling pitch was so perfect, nice great things about the house, about never before customer experience, state of art and all that.. Yes boss ! We ve seen it all ! But is there a choice ? Flipside of Marketing !! Creating The Need.. Where marketing for awareness now part of marketing history..
Jus hoping dad's not falling for it and we don own a house in Mohali !! 😉 (I am just joking Dad! Incase u got to read this !!) ha ha ha !!

Romance is....

People who speak to me know that I do keep coming back to this topic pretty often cause it is very close to my heart! Romance always is! ...
